26/07/2020 - Weekend spins and racing

Once again a large group of riders turned out for the club’s Sunday Spins and divided up into various groups. The main route was a rolling first half followed by a relatively flat second half with a nice push from a tailwind. A decent sized group of approx. 15 riders completed the early loop before joining the main groups for a run from Emyvale to Tydavnet, Scotstown, Roslea, Fivemiletown, Brookeboro, Lisnaskea (coffee-stop), Newtownbutler, Clones, Monaghan and home.

Oran Magee travelled to Waterville in Co. Kerry and competed in the Hardman Skellig Coast Triathalon on Saturday. He successfully took home a well-deserved third place overall.

Karl Atkinson (A4) and Declan McEntee (A3) also competed on Saturday in the Peter Bidwell Memorial in Donore, Co. Louth. Unfortunately, Declan’s race was over almost before it started as he was involved in a coming together between several riders after the start and lost his chain as a result. Fortunately, all stayed upright and no one hit the deck. Karl had much better luck in his race, coming in 3rd having lapped much of the rest of the A4 field.

Also in Donore, Caolan and Aoife McKenna competed in the U14 and U12 categories respectively. Aoife came in 7th and Caolan came in 12th in what proved to be very tough fields.

On Sunday, Aaron McQuaid (A3), Paul Brady (A3), Fintan Sherry (A3), James McKenna (Jnr) and Barry Cassidy (A4) travelled to Copperhill for the Brendan Campbell Memorial hosted by @Droghedawheelers.

Here is Paul’s race report. “All went well, myself, Aaron, Fintan and James rode the A3/J/L race, 5 laps 70km, fast flat course with strong tail win into the finish. Very hard to get away and no breaks made it. Few fast guys holding back, but good fast sprint finish, I came in around the back of the main bunch and glad of no incidents……… Weather was dry except for a few mins downpour on the start line just to wake us up………… Race was jump - stop mainly, plenty of attempts to get up the road from small groups but nothing made it”.

Well done to all who competed this weekend.
