A number of our members completed a Sports First Aid Course with Pro Training Courses, delivered by Jamielee McGirl (who recently joined our Saturday Steady Spins) to help strengthen safety awareness and emergency preparedness within the club. This was a fantastic opportunity to learn valuable and potentially life‑saving skills.

Why Sports First Aid matters for Cyclists

The Sports First Aid Course is specifically designed to address injuries and emergencies commonly encountered in sporting environments. For cyclists, this includes:

  • Immediate accident response following falls or collisions

  • Bleeding control and management of soft tissue injuries

  • Recognition and care of head, spinal, and fracture injuries

  • Cardiac arrest response, including CPR and proper AED use

  • Scene safety and casualty assessment, crucial when incidents occur on open roads

These skills are particularly relevant when riders are training in rural areas or in fast‑moving group situations, where emergency services may take time to arrive.

Training was hands‑on, engaging and delivered by a certified instructor (Jamielee), giving participants the confidence to assess situations quickly, provide first aid, and use an AED where required - often before emergency services arrive.

By investing in Sports First Aid training, Emyvale Cycling Club continues to promote a culture of responsibility and safety, ensuring riders look out for one another.

The course focused on common cycling‑related incidents, including falls, collisions, bleeding, head injuries and cardiac emergencies, equipping members with practical skills that can be applied during training spins, sportives and club events.

  • Confidence of group leaders and ride mentors

  • Reassurance for new and less experienced riders

  • Preparedness at organised events and community initiatives
