Emyvale Cycling Club is excited to launch our Couch to 50km course. This 8-week course is open to cyclists of all ages, abilities, and fitness levels. The course aims to help participants build confidence and stamina, with the goal of completing a 50km ride.

Cost: €7.00 for the full 8-week course (to cover insurance) pre-register here


Cycling is a fantastic way to improve fitness, facilitate weight loss, and boost mental well-being. It also allows for social interactions while enjoying the fresh air and beautiful scenery. Additionally, the guidance and support from our local cycling club and experienced cyclists provide encouragement, structure, and fun throughout the experience.



Overview of the 8-Week Course


Week #1: Bike Checks: Tuesday, 21 April @ 6.30pm (Glennon Church car park, H18 YT20)

Your journey begins with ensuring your bike is safe and road-ready. We kick off with professional bike checks carried out by our very own Spin Doctor, Marc Andrews.

Marc and the team will inspect brakes, gears, tyres, and overall bike setup to ensure you are roadworthy and safe.



Week #2: Cycling Skills: Tuesday, 28 April @ 6.30pm (Glennon Church car park, H18 YT20)

Before hitting the road, we will focus on essential cycling skills:

  • Starting and stopping safely

  • Cornering

  • Signalling

  • Group riding etiquette

  • Balance and bike handling

This skills session will be supervised by our experienced Group Ride Leaders.



Week #3: First Road Ride (~15km): Tues, 5th May @ 6.30pm (Emyvale Parish Field, H18 WK22)

Each week, we will gradually increase the distance:

  • Exploring scenic local routes

  • Mixing flat stretches with gentle hills

  • Developing fitness, stamina, and confidence

  • Learning how to ride safely in a group


This is your first real spin on the road! We will start gently with a short, easy-paced road ride of approx. 15km. There is no pressure or rush. It’s all about getting used to the bike, the roads, and the group.



Week #4: Building up the distance (~22km): Saturday 16th May @ 9am

Each week, we will gradually building up the distance. The goal is 22km on this weeks spin.



Week #5: Building up the distance (~30km): Saturday 23rd May @ 9am

The 30km Milestone! Well done!



Week #6: Building up the distance (~35km): Saturday 30th May @ 9am

A full rota of experienced Emyvale Cycling Club Group Ride Leaders will support you throughout, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience. The goal is 35km on this weeks spin.



Week #7: Building up the distance (~43km): Saturday 6th June @ 9am

Nearly there! The goal is 43km on this weeks spin. You’ll enjoy varied landscapes and routes, with plenty of encouragement along the way.



Week #8: Your First 50km! Saturday 13th June @ 9am

You've done it!

By the end of the Couch-to-50km program, you will complete a full 50km ride. This is a very achievable milestone for any beginner with steady weekly progress.
